What is tank Pilsner?
Tank Pilsner is Pilsner Urquell served fresh from large pub tanks. It is unpasteurised, so it skips the heat treatment used to extend shelf life. The beer travels from the brewery under temperature control and stays in a sealed bag inside the tank, protected from air until it is poured.
How is keg beer different?
Most draught beer you order in pubs and bars is keg beer. It arrives in smaller, replaceable containers; tank beer uses a more specialised setup. In a conventional keg, CO₂ or a mix of CO₂ and nitrogen pushes the beer to the tap; in a tank, pressure acts on the outside of the sealed bag, keeping the pushing gas separate from the beer. Pilsner Urquell says its keg beer keeps longer, while its unpasteurised tank beer is intended for quick turnover. Both need careful storage, clean beer lines and a skilled pour to taste their best.
